Fire rated glass is specialist safety glazing designed to provide a specified level of fire resistance when installed as part of an appropriate glazed system. It can be used in fire-resisting doors, windows, screens and partitions where the glazing forms part of a building’s overall fire safety strategy.

Window Doctor provides professional fire rated glass replacements through our nationwide network of local branches, providing suitable installations in residential, commercial and other properties.

Unlike ordinary replacement glazing, fire rated glass must be appropriate for its intended application and compatible with the surrounding frame, glazing materials and system. Our experienced glazing engineers can assess damaged or existing fire-resistant glazing and advise on the appropriate replacement for the installation.

Common Reasons To Replace Fire Rated Glass:

Fire-resistant glazing may be required in particular locations to help restrict the spread of fire and, depending on the specified system, heat and smoke. It should therefore never be replaced with ordinary glass simply because it appears visually similar.

Common reasons for replacing or installing fire rated glass include:

  • Cracked or shattered glazing – damaged fire-resistant glass may no longer provide the performance expected of the original installation.
  • Impact damage – accidental impacts can compromise otherwise serviceable glazing.
  • Damage to the surrounding glazing system – problems with frames, beads or associated materials may require the complete glazed assembly to be assessed.
  • Existing glass is unsuitable for the application – an assessment may identify glazing that does not provide the required fire performance for its location.
  • Building alterations or refurbishment – changes to a property can create different fire-safety requirements.
  • Replacement following damage to a fire door or screen – glazing within a fire-resisting assembly needs to remain appropriate for that system.
  • New fire-resistant screens or partitions – specialist glazing may be required as part of a new installation.
  • Changes to the use of a building or area – different uses can affect the fire-safety provisions required.
  • Deterioration of the existing installation – ageing or damaged components surrounding the glass may affect the suitability of the overall system.

The correct specification depends on where and how the glazing is being used. Fire resistance is measured for defined periods and against particular performance criteria, so the appropriate glass for one installation may not be suitable for another.

Different Types of Fire-Resistant Glazing

Fire-resistant glazing is available with different performance characteristics depending on the requirements of the installation.

  • Integrity glass is designed to resist the passage of flames and hot gases for its specified period.
  • Integrity and insulation glass is designed to provide fire integrity while also limiting heat transfer through the glazing for its specified period.

Other specialist systems may provide additional control of heat radiation where required.

The required classification and period of fire resistance depend on the particular building, location and fire-safety design. For this reason, fire rated glazing should be specified according to the requirements of the complete installation rather than simply selecting a particular thickness or type of glass.

The Complete Glazing System Matters

Fire resistance isn’t provided by the glass alone. The glass, frame, glazing beads, seals, setting blocks and other components need to work together as an appropriate fire-resistant glazing system. This is particularly important when replacing damaged glazing within fire doors, screens and partitions. Installing a fire-resistant pane into an unsuitable frame or using inappropriate glazing materials does not automatically create a compliant fire-resistant assembly.

Where ordinary safety glazing rather than fire resistance is required, Window Doctor also provides specialist toughened glass replacements and laminated glass replacements, alongside our wider glass replacement services.

If your fire rated glass has been cracked, shattered or otherwise damaged, or you need specialist replacement glazing for a fire-resistant door, window or screen, contact Window Doctor. Through our nationwide network of local branches, we can assess the installation, advise on the appropriate replacement and provide a free, no-obligation quote for the work.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

Fire rated or fire-resistant glass is specialist glazing that has been tested and classified to provide defined fire-resistance performance when used as part of an appropriate glazing system. Depending on its classification, this can include resistance to the passage of fire and hot gases and, for some systems, limiting heat transfer.

Not where fire-resistant glazing is required. The replacement needs to provide the appropriate performance for the particular installation and be compatible with the complete glazing system. Ordinary glass should not simply be substituted for specified fire-resistant glazing.

In European fire-resistance classifications, E refers to integrity – resistance to fire penetration – while I refers to insulation, or resistance to excessive heat transfer. A glazing system may therefore have different classifications depending on the performance required.

Fire-resistant glazing may form part of the measures used to satisfy fire-safety requirements under the Building Regulations. The required performance depends on the building, location and application, so the appropriate specification should be determined for the particular installation rather than assuming one type of fire rated glass is suitable everywhere.

Yes. Window Doctor can replace suitable fire-resistant glazing in doors, windows, screens and other appropriate glazed systems, subject to the requirements and compatibility of the particular installation.
