A professionally installed pet flap gives your cat or dog the freedom to come and go without you constantly having to open the door. Whether you’re installing a pet flap for the first time, upgrading to a microchip model or replacing an old or damaged flap, it’s important that it is fitted correctly and securely.
Window Doctor provides professional pet flap and cat flap installations through our nationwide network of local branches, including installations into suitable glass doors, uPVC doors and other compatible external doors.
Our experienced engineers can install a wide variety of cat flaps and dog doors, including standard, lockable, microchip and electronic models. Where a pet flap needs to be installed into a glazed door, we can assess the existing glass and arrange the appropriate replacement glazing with the opening manufactured to accommodate the new pet flap.

Common Reasons To Install or Replace A Pet Flap:
Pet flaps provide convenient independent access for cats and dogs, but there are also several reasons why an existing flap may need upgrading or replacing.
Common reasons include:
- Giving your pet independent access – allowing cats and dogs to enter and leave without somebody repeatedly opening the door.
- Installing a cat flap into a glass door – specialist glazing may be required where the chosen location is within a glazed panel.
- Upgrading to a microchip cat flap – helping control which pets are able to enter your home.
- Replacing a basic pet flap with a more secure model – newer products may provide improved locking and access-control options.
- Replacing a broken or damaged pet flap – hinges, catches, flaps and locking components can deteriorate through regular use.
- Poor previous installation – an incorrectly fitted flap may not sit properly within the door or glazing.
- Upgrading to a larger pet flap – a growing pet or larger dog may require a different size opening.
- Replacing a draughty old pet flap – damaged or poorly closing flaps can allow unwanted air through.
- Changing the access location – refurbishment or replacement doors may mean relocating the pet flap.
- General wear and tear – frequent daily use can eventually result in worn or unreliable components.
The appropriate installation method depends heavily on the door and glazing construction. Cutting an opening into an existing glazed unit isn’t always possible, particularly where safety glass is involved, so a replacement glass unit manufactured specifically for the pet flap may be required.

Installing a Cat Flap into a Glass Door
Installing a cat or dog flap into glass requires a different approach from fitting one into a suitable solid door panel. Depending on the existing glazing, it may be necessary to replace the complete glass unit with a new unit manufactured with the correct opening already incorporated. This is particularly important where the existing door contains toughened safety glass, which cannot simply be cut after it has been manufactured.
The new glass can be measured for the existing door and produced to accommodate the required pet flap before being installed into the existing frame. This means homeowners with predominantly glazed patio or external doors aren’t necessarily prevented from having a cat or dog flap simply because there isn’t a suitable solid panel available.
Microchip & Lockable Cat Flaps
Microchip pet flaps can provide greater control over which animals are able to enter your home. Compatible models recognise an authorised pet’s microchip or identification device before allowing access, helping prevent neighbouring cats and other animals from simply walking inside.
Depending on the chosen product, other options can include four-way locking controls, allowing the flap to be configured for entry only, exit only, fully locked or free movement in both directions.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs
Can you install a cat flap into a glass door?
Yes, in many suitable glazed doors. Rather than simply cutting the existing glass, it may be necessary to manufacture a new glass unit with an opening specifically produced for the pet flap. The replacement unit can then be fitted into the existing door.
Can you put a cat flap into double glazing?
Yes. A suitable replacement double glazed unit can be manufactured with the required opening incorporated into it. The pet flap can then be installed when the new glazing is fitted.
Can you cut a hole into my existing toughened glass for a cat flap?
No. Toughened glass cannot simply be cut or drilled after the toughening process without causing it to break. Where an existing door contains toughened glass, a new appropriately manufactured glass unit will normally be required with the opening incorporated before the glass is toughened.
Do you install microchip cat flaps?
Yes. Window Doctor can install suitable microchip and electronic cat flaps, as well as standard and four-way locking models. The exact installation will depend on the chosen product and the construction of the door.
Can you install dog flaps as well as cat flaps?
Yes. Window Doctor installs suitable dog flaps and dog doors as well as cat flaps. Larger openings can require different glazing or installation considerations, so the door and required pet flap should be assessed before the work is carried out.
